Notes:
I was planning to join David WD6T in a Multi-Op entry, using the K6MTU station.
However, plans changed. I urged him to go Single-Op instead of spending
precious hours the day before the contest to help me set up for the first time
using remote Flex SmartSDR/CAT/DAX and remote networked N1MM+. Chris N6WM
offered me the same with K6LRG. I'm glad both of them participated as
Single-Ops. They did well and did not have to waste time guiding me through
setup. I was able to get on the air from home part time and put another log in
the NCCC tally.
I set up a temporary antenna in my backyard. This was the first time that I've
ever put an antenna on the MGS push-up mast/tripod system. I measured lengths
of Mastrant and guyed the mast in three sections, also for the first time. I
did not extend the top two sections of the mast except one of them about a foot
to support the Inv-Vee above the highest guy ring. I also made a 10m Inv-Vee
using parts of my 80m dipole that was in storage. Legs of the wire were
extended such that it was 90deg/270deg broadside. I cut a new wire and I
adjusted the number of turns and cores for 10m per K9YC's choke cookbook. I
will have to use his updated methods later for using multiple turns of RG400
instead. Start to finish, the whole system took a while to set up, but it
worked great.
I got on the air Saturday evening to a stone-dead 10m band. Just worked some
nearby Bay Area stations. I couldn't even hear the East Bay or North Bay. And
no Sporadic E heard from my QTH. I wondered if my mast or antenna fell down.
They were OK.
I resumed Sunday morning:
-First non-CA station heard was PJ2T at 6:52am PST, then TI1T and TI2OY. None
could hear me.
-I listened to W6YX call CQ on CW for about 10 minutes until the band opened
better for me. Mike worked YT, HA, 9A and SN in a 5 minute period just after
7:00am PST. Impressed!
-The first QSO for me in the morning was with an XE at 1521Z. Then the band
opened stateside a few minutes later.
-I heard two ZS stations around 7:30am PST, then F5NBX at 7:52am, ZD7BG at
7:54am, TM2D at 8:11am and EA5O at 8:16am. But I wasn't able to be heard for a
QSO. By 8:45am, EU had totally faded for me.
-I was pleasantly surprised at how well this modest antenna was being heard in
NA/SA/AS with 100W. I was able to call CQ and get answers. I had 76 QSOs in
the 18Z hour on Phone and 70 QSOs in the last hour of the contest on CW. I had
to take some offtime in the 22Z hour Sunday.
-I got 6 new mults in the last 10 minutes of the contest and broke 200k points
at 2359Z!
-Strangely, I never contacted KH6. I went to packet spots for several of them,
and the only one I could even hear was KH6TU. I called a few times but couldn't
break the pileup. I would have thought KH6 would be easy, but that was not the
case for me last weekend.
-Activity from MN was incredible. W9 and W0 were loud. W8 did not open up for
me until the afternoon.
In all, I'm really happy with the result from this part time effort. It was
quite satisfying to set all this up and make QSOs with it. It looks like I
qualify under the new limited antenna overlay.
