Park portable, Elecraft KX3, end-fed 200 ft horizontal "NVIS
special".
While operating other bands outdoors around dusk, I wanted to see if a long wire
would suffice to work my neighbor island friends Dave and Rob (NH6V) at KH6AQ. I
deployed most of a 250-ft spool of wire between 3 trees at 6-8 foot height. Had
no problem working KH6AQ - my first 160m contact ever, and I could hear a number
of West Coast contest stations running. Not surprisingly with my radiation
pattern, they couldn't hear me.
It was a fun experiment to try out the normally-unused band on my radio. I wish
I could find a decent way to use 160 more often - it's an impossibility for me
at home as a condo dweller, park operation at night is difficult/risky, and very
long wires are hard to reliably deploy in temporary/portable situations. I'm
sure a 130+ foot end-fed vertical or inverted-L would be great if I knew how or
where to deploy it!
Thanks, Dave and Rob, for the QSO - and congrats on your fine effort this year!
Aloha and 72/73,
Bob in Honolulu
