Comments:
Field day expedition operation by K2GO (HP1XT /CX7TT) and K9VV (NP2X). It was
great to say hello to so many of our long-time friends scattered around the
globe. The global-local expanse our wonderful hobby never fails to disappoint.
Getting to the QTH was challenged by road closures due to
"protestantes" (protesters) closing major roads at strategic choke
points at several. Seems that the local politicos pulled a fast one by
approving a mining contract in record time, thereby irritating many locals. We
had to sit at one roadblock for a couple of hours admiring how locals were
dealing with the inconvenience. The Panamanian supreme court is deliberating as
I type this, with all of the protesters abandoning the road blocks to congregate
and protest outside of the supreme court building. Should be interesting
coverage on the news tonight, hi hi.
My (K9VV) first experience using a Buddi-Hex beam, K4 and Mercury IIIs amp. I
now understand why Hex-beams are popular expedition choices. Easy to assemble,
easy to breakdown, and well engineered. All were impressive performers, but I
think the unsung hero was mother nature's salt water amplifier at our QTH on the
Atlantic side entry to the Panama Canal. (Near Colon on the Atlantic side of
the canal) The 40 & 80 meter performance by the EFHW at 25 feet speaks to
the effectiveness of the QTH. As we operated from a marina, we had many curious
boaters wondering what the spiderweb thingy was on our balcony as they passed
by. A few folks were retired radio ops who understood what we were doing.
Our sympathies to our northerly neighbors who experienced worse effects of the
elevated K-index levels. We noted that the bands sounded a little mushy on
Sunday, but had no idea the K-index was so high, most likely due to our
southerly latitude, or maybe the 807s, hi hi. High band condx were a LOT of
fun!
HUGE thanks to Tom, K2GO, for arranging this fun time and providing all of the
equipment.
