Comments:
This weekend proved to be an exception to the recent norm
where significant solar disturbances align with major contest
weekends. Even though the K index began fairly high (5,
eventually cresting to 6), the high SFI (179-180) mitigated
what otherwise could have been a tough slog.
The start found both 15 and 10 open to Asia, an ideal
situation for an M/2 entry. We managed to run at a nice clip
into Asia: 280 Qs in the first hour, with nearly 700 by the
end of hour three. We then migrated to 40/20 where Mitch was
treated to a very nice opening into Europe. Then followed the
Friday night shift with solid openings into Asia on 40 and 80,
but especially 40.
By Saturday morning, the K had peaked somewhat and conditions
had worsened. Although we had a solid European opening on 20,
we were unable to find traction into Europe on 15. There were
EU mults to be had on 15 via S&P, but no opportunity to run.
As the afternoon wore on, we still managed to accumulate some
good totals into Asia on 10 and especially 15.
As is typically the case, the wee hours of Saturday night
provided a greater test of patience with reduced activity on
the lower bands and into Asia. One highlight for me overnight
was working the WWDXC gang at H44WA on 160 at around 1:30 AM!
As dawn on Sunday approached, the K began to drop and there
was evidence that a better future lay ahead: signals were
heard on 15 and 10 as early as 4:30 AM local time. Sure
enough, 20, then 15, and [YES!] 10 provided openings into
Europe on Sunday morning. The additional multipliers on 10
were especially helpful as we struggled to maintain our
position in the online scoreboard ranking -- where we jousted
with OZ5W, N4IQ, and W7RM. (Always fantastic to hear Rush
Drake’s famous call in the mix!)
We had looked forward to broadening our tactics with a new
weapon in our arsenal: an additional tower with JK Mega-size
TriBander. Unfortunately, the feedline (we assume) developed
an issue which put prevented its use for much of the contest.
On the plus side, calm weather conditions meant no power
outage (last year’s nemesis).
Overall, we had great fun: besting last year’s score by about
70% and achieving DXCC on 40, 20, and 15 (with 90 countries on
10).
