Comments:
I operated portable at while camping at Ahupua'a 'O Kahana State Park on the
windward side of Oahu.
I used a BuddiHEX antenna from BuddiPole for 10-20m, and a Coffee-and-Ham-Radios
Mercury Linked Dipole for 40m about 30ft off the ground. Both antennas were
about 20ft from the beach.
This was my first contest operating QRP. I have done other contests in the low
power category but wanted to try something new. I was a little anxious about
running 5w, but after four people responded to my first CQ, I knew I would be
okay.
Friday night saw the best QSO rates. Mid-day Saturday was quite a bit slower but
it picked up again as 20m opened in the evening. Sunday was noticeably slower,
but it might just have felt that way because I was tired, my back was hurting
from sitting on a camp chair for 30+ hours, and I was getting dehydrated baking
in the sun. I was thinking about packing up early so I wouldn't have to tear
everything down in the dark, but then the QSOs started rolling in again so I
stayed on until the end.
I wanted to run more SSB, but I was calling CQ endlessly with very few
responses. Ended up running FT8 most of the weekend as a result.
Multipliers may change based on calculation of states from grid squares. I
compared results from what is listed on QRZ. Official contest scoring may have
different results.
73 and Mahalo!
