Comments:
My SO2R and keying configuration had been reset during Field Day and I thought I
had restored all of it, but after having several callers repeat their callsigns
multiple times I realized I hadn't set the PTT to CW delay. A post-contest check
of RBN showed almost no spots in the first hour before I corrected this.
One of my radios was on 20 almost the entire 24 hours except for the few times I
tried 10 meters. There wasn't much on 10 meters so I never stayed there long. I
heard GR2HQ on 10 in the afternoon but they didn't copy me.
It was hard to leave the great conditions on the high bands at night to go down
to 80 and 40. My first visit to 80 there was only one signal on the band and I
couldn't raise anyone by CQing. It was also hard to resist doing 2BSIQ instead
of tuning to find more mults. I had 34 more mults last year and nearly the same
number of Qs.
I really missed the Yagi on 40 which was destroyed in a wind storm earlier this
year. The inverted vee worked surprisingly well but I couldn't be heard by
several EU HQ mults.
Last year I had started with four hours of 150+ Qs so I was feeling discouraged
when I noticed I was 200 Qs behind last year after 5 hours. The terrific
conditions on 20 and 15 at night got me back on target to nearly equal last
year's Qs but my focus on the Q count was to the detriment of my score since all
of the 2BSIQ wasn't adding as many mults.
Thanks to all for the Qs and apologies to those affected by my poor keying in
the first hour.
73,
-Mike, N7MH
