Hello from Kawaihae, Big Island!
FT450D, 50W, sitting outside under a linked dipole.
This was my first time to do low power, and since I'm usually 5W/QRP, this feels
like QRO! The reason, my KX2 is sick, so I can't use it. It was a scramble to
figure out how to connect the Yaesu FT450D to the antenna, which is 120 ft from
the house. My attempts at 19z failed (150ft of multiple pieces of RG58 coax had
too much loss). So I moved the radio outside, and my husband found a 100ft
extension cable so I could power the radio outside. This may sound strange, but
this is how I operate with the KX2. This worked pretty well, except that it
started to rain, so I quite after about 30 minutes.
Other changes as well - I don't like the keyer on the ft450d - it always adds
extra dits randomly , so this pushed me to finally figure out and use the
MORTTY. It worked well! Except for the first time I dropped my call in, it was
at 44wpm, not what I intended. Other issues - I don't know how to use the radio
very well, and there were lots of nearby signals, I need to figure out the
filters. Also, I miss the CWT thing on the KX2, I don't know how to tell when
I'm on the other guy's frequency.
Anyways, I got on the air and made contacts, so I was very happy about that.
I'll figure out how to use the FT450d, and maybe even figure out how to do this
so I'm not outside?
Thanks for the contacts!
Aloha and 73
Heather AH7RF
