Comments:
This one was somewhat of a roller-coaster ride.
My first inclination that the WPX SSB contest might be "interesting"
was when
my wife mentioned a headline news article she’d seen talking about the
"most
powerful solar storm in nearly six years" which was predicted to take
effect on
the Friday of the contest weekend.
We often joke about how the Sun must subscribe to the contest calendar -- it is
uncanny how often these disturbances align with major contest weekends -- but
THIS was taking things too far!
Sure enough we were treated to a pretty tough slog at the start. We toughed it
out and kept
our noses to the grindstone to see what could be done. By about 5 hours in, we
gave up on any idea we might have entertained for trying to best our previous
year’s score.
When the Friday overnight shift came, I encountered an issue with the rotor
control which made it impossible to turn the tower to Asia for the
all-important low-band six-pointers. Since I wasn’t sure what was wrong and
was
concerned it might be a physical or electrical problem, I decided to await
further investigation in the morning. Besides: the bands were lousy and I was
hearing the siren call of getting extra sleep. (It turned out the COM ports on
the remote computer had been scrambled by RF and the on-site computer needed to
be rebooted.) At that point it wasn’t looking to be a very productive
contest.
As a result, we didn’t find out how good or bad the Friday evening run into
Asia
might have been since the station was essentially inactive for about 7 hours
the first night.
By Saturday morning, the propagation had shown signs of improvement and that
trend continued until the end of the contest.
Even so, conditions remained weird. Twenty -- typically the bread-and-butter
band
did not produce up to par. And even though a major solar disturbance had
recently
swatted our planet, 15 and 10 turned out to be the performers.
Go figure.
With the conditions steadily improving and making a decent showing into Asia
the second night, it dawned on us on Sunday mornin--after a solid opening on 15
into Europe -- that our score might work out
better than we had imagined.
Sure enough, much to our surprise, we managed to boost our Q and M totals
enough (8 %) to offset the missing high-point/low-band contacts: in the
final few minutes of the contest we squeaked by the previous year’s score by
the skin of our teeth (0.2%!).
We continue to enjoy the competition and camaraderie engendered by the
real-time online scoreboard. It keeps us motivated and familiar with our
colleagues who share our struggle to maintain BIC when conditions are sub-par.
As always, thanks to those who provided all the contacts and the numerous club
members and friends who slogged through the same conditions, especially at the
start.
