Wow! That. Was. Fun.
We finally hit the sweet spot for a DX context weekend: insignificant
geomagnetic disturbances, no wind storms, no power outages, and relatively few
technical glitches. And there was propagation... oh yes!!
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the weekend was excellent conditions
across the bands. 10 and 15 were outstanding--the best I've experienced in
years. At the same time, the low bands were also solid performers.
The biggest surprise was 20: although excellent, there was so much going on
elsewhere that it had the lowest Q count of all the bands above 80. A number of
good hours on Sunday morning and afternoon helped pull it out of what might
have been an lackluster contribution to the overall score.
Another measure of the even conditions was all bands above 80 had nearly 900 Qs
or more. 15 came in with over 1500 Qs and we tantalizingly close to the 1000 Q
mark on 10.
The Saturday morning opening into Europe was the stuff of dreams long
forgotten. Both 10 and 15 were WIDE OPEN for extended periods. The first five
hours of the EU opening saw us with combined rates into Europe averaging over
210 per hour, peaking at 277/hour at around 9 AM. We logged 20% of our overall
QSO total in those five hours alone. By the time the smoke clear, Cabrillo
Statistics showed that 55% of our contacts were with Europe. That was the big
factor contributing to a decent multiplier total and, in combination with help
from our Asian friends made it possible for us to blast past last year’s
score
at the 30-hour mark.
We bested last year’s score by 80% and pushed well past the record NW
Division
M/2 score of N7BV set in 2015. Looks like we also wound up surpassing the
previous NW Division M/M record of W7FU set back in 1979. (See
https://contests.arrl.org/records.php.)
Of course, with conditions this good there were many monster scores such that
we spent most of the contest in the middle of the M/2 pack on the online
contest scoreboard. It will be interesting to see how many records will be
surpassed by numerous great ops and stations on this special weekend.
Two experiences which I'll treasure for some time to come:
- Experiencing the 10-meter EU opening on Saturday morning. This is my
50th year as a Ham and I've never experienced anything like THAT before.
The solar conditions in combination with amazing antennas on a big tower
on top of an even bigger bluff situated over miles of saltwater toward
Europe made for an experience I won’t soon forget.
- A surprise "mini-run" into Asia on 160 meters around daybreak on
Sunday
morning. (From my limited perspective on Top Band, I’m declaring a
string of 24 a "run." :-) )
That’s part of what I love the most about hamming -- the unpredictable
surprises associated with band openings and the mystery of it all. I still feel
that same magic I experienced as a teen when I first discovered there were
invisible signals all around us from all over the world. Signals that were
just waiting to be decoded and explored.
We managed not to push ourselves to hard by adopting a strategy of
"multi-two by day" and "multi-single by night." When things
were hopping, we
kept both radios going full bore. But when things slowed a bit -- or eye lids
drooped excessively, we ramped down to a single transmitter. There were a few
short periods where neither transmitter was active, but that was the exception.
We wound up running the station at about 76% capacity over the 48-hour
period. There was at least one transmitter active for about 44 of the 48 hours.
Enjoyed hearing so many regulars and club members enjoying the same thrilling
conditions.
