Recovering from flu so a part time effort.
Some observations:
If you're going to ask QRL (and, obviously, you should) perhaps waiting for an
answer would be useful. One stations sent qrl and, seemingly without unkeying,
started CQing. Why then bother asking?
I run unassisted so am not well versed in how assisted works. But, from my
experience Sat around 0013Z, seems you click on a packet spot (in this case
wrong) and, ignore the cw being sent and dump in your call. Some VERY
recognizable 1X2 contest stations need to better train their ops: unlike, say,
ft8, you can actually decode, yourself, what is being sent:) After 15 minutes of
almost constant dupes, I qsy'd to escape.
Contests are always a great way to stress test your station. This contest showed
some software issues. I run a SDR (Anan 7000dle) with a higher end PC (11th gen
i7 and 32Gb ram). Should run flawlessly. Yeah, not so much. Maybe its time to go
back to two tin cans and a string.
Condx seemed marginal. DX wasn't strong nor plentiful but then I did stop early
each night (darned flu). Condx to the west were also challenging. Again, I am
sure I missed the peaks each night.
Oh, one more observation. As Rob Sherwood pointed out in a QST article, its past
time OEMs pay more attention to xmit quality. With more and more radios offering
panadapters or outputs for them, its sure easy to see the stations spreading
their signal like Christmas cheer. You know, far and wide. We used to be a self
policing hobby. Hopefully neighbors or club members will bring pressure to bear
to clean up these signals.
Thank you to the ARRL for sponsoring the contest. Here's a bit of input to you.
How about changing things up one year and eliminating assisted category? Back to
the "old days" where folks had to search out stuff. Would be
entertaining.
