Comments:
Didn't think I would hear any signals, given the solar indices and only 2 years
from solar max. But I had to try out my new home brew RX mag loop. The loop
was sure quiet compared to my shunt-fed tower and helped to pull many weak
stations through. Unfortunately, the QSB was so bad at times that I could only
make out every other letter or just a partial call. It reminded me of meteor
shower prop. Perhaps the prop should be referred to as "Sporadic-C"
for a layer closer to the earth than the D-layer but consisting of weakly
ionized Clouds.
Because my shunt-fed tower is only 40' high, I can only get a 3:1 SWR on 160m.
So I had to run LP or the RF in the shack would freeze my computer and also
overheat the amp (with internal tuner). No point in running assisted either.
Still, had fun and managed to work some real DX from Planet Alberta: Hawaii,
Maine and STX.
