Park portable QRP - Elecraft KX3, 31-ft EFHW vertically mounted in tree.
My original aim in working DX contests as a QRP station was building my country
count for QRP DXCC. I have reached and exceeded that goal, so I'm not as
motivated as I was a few years ago. Even with limited power and space, I still
enjoy putting in a few hours and seeing how well I can do with 5W and a wire
from the mid-Pacific.
I have usually done a Friday afternoon session in past CQWWs, but I also know
that pileups are the biggest then and a QRP station can get lost in the action.
I was active Saturday 2130-0145z, and Sunday 1900-2330.
10m was the workhorse band in those hours in Hawaii, and I had decent success to
Asia, Oceania, and the Americas. When it got really slow, I would check 15 and
20. 15 was better than 20 for me, but still not as good as 10. I was
occasionally able to run a frequency for a handful of contacts, but most of my
effort was plodding search-and-pounce.
In reviewing my results and finding that so much of my activity was on 10
meters, I submitted as a single-band entry. I would like to have beaten the
SO10-QRP record for Hawaii, but my limited on-air time outdoors prevented any
serious effort to do so. The next few years will likely be even better on 10, so
I may try again next year.
Hope everyone had a good time this year!
Aloha and 72/73
