Ugh! I obviously made the wrong band choice. Even knowing the solar condx
going in, I was hoping that the band would rebound, much like it did in the SSB
leg. Unfortunately it didn’t work out that way.

The band opened on Saturday around 1215Z and I had a few runs to EU and NA. I
finished Saturday at 2130Z with 285Q, 18Z, 66C and ~60k points. Not quite what
I was expecting, considering I finished the first day in the SSB leg with 612Q
19Z and 53C. I was ahead in countries, pretty much even in zones, but way down
(less than half) in Qs. Sunday would have to be a hell of a day to make up for
it.

The band showed promise early Sunday when it opened around 1230Z and it sounded
pretty good, but it didn’t stay that way for long. Two hours later there were
still loud EU coming through, but I was going 10 minutes without answers to my
CQs and I was not being picked up by any EU RBN stations. By 1500 the band had
pretty much closed to EU and I had made a total of 50Qs in 2.5 hours. In the
next hour I made about 15 Qs. The waterfall was pretty much empty and I
wasn’t hearing anything new on the band. I wasn’t feeling overly motivated
at spending another 5 hours CQing on an empty band so I decided to pack it in at
1620Z with 354Q, 21Z, 87C for a score of 97,308 points, less than a third of the
Qs and points I was aiming for. I spent the rest of the afternoon volunteering
at the local food bank and mountain biking.

I spent some time Friday evening, Saturday morning and evening, and Sunday
morning and evening working the other bands. In hindsight I should have gone
single band 20m or 40m, or made the commitment to go full time on all bands.
You live and learn.

Despite the lousy condx (for me anyway) on 10m, the weekend wasn’t without a
couple of highlights:

- Hearing (but not working) JS6TSE long path at 1330Z on 10m! (Odd though that
it was the only JA spotted at the time).
- E2A calling me on 20m!

Thanks for the Qs!

73,

Chris VO2AC / VE3FU
