Wow, what a contest! To start, I want to thank Pat, N2IEN for letting me use his
station at the last second on Long Island. I was going to use a 9A station on
the Remote Ham Radio Youth Network, then that got booked, then I was supposed to
use the huge 9A1TT, then that got booked about 6 hours before the contest. I
didn't think I would get this great of station surrounded by saltwater, though!
I didn't realize how good propagation could be on the east coast. 15m and 10m
were ROCKING, and I didn't want to leave! Being fully remote to this station was
just a blast, and it seemed the world could hear me. At first, I thought it was
going to be rough, as I only had 500W at my disposal from a PGXL, and N2IEN was
in Florida, so he couldn't bump up the drive power, but it barely made a
difference. I probably could have operated LP and still would've gotten the same
result. I operated 85% running, which made it really fun, because the rates just
kept on coming. I think my best rate was around 170 for a morning hour. The only
thing that would have made this effort the best it could be would be SO2R, but
doing that remotely would have been a pain. There was also NO internet dropouts
the entire contest, which was unexpected, but I am very thankful. 10m was
probably the best band at about 6 AM CST, as there was practically no noise, and
running Europe with S9 signals could not have been better...Doing 2BSIQ with 10m
and 15m would have been GREAT at that time.
Now, 80m and 160m were not as good as I expected. The results show for that, as
I could barely hear Europe on 160m and they could barely hear me. It may have
been the inverted-Ls as well, but for the most part, the low bands were just
crummy in general.
Thanks for all the Qs!
