Having no station of my own all my activity is via remote control of someone
else's station. This station in Glenville, NY, is decently equipped and
generally available whenever I want to use it.
I usually do mostly S&P in contests but I've been working on my CW speed so
wanted to try running in this contest. After about 30 min on 20M Sat afternoon
with slow progress I gave up and went back to S&P. Couldn't get a run going
on 40M so went back to S&P there. When I went to try 80M the amp kept
faulting on me. I had run into this problem a few months before so the station
owner granted me permission to power-down and recycle the amp and tuner since we
weren't sure of the cause. After doing that a couple times Sat evening I
concluded it must be because of high SWR, even with the tuner. The rig runs fine
on SSB higher in the band but I couldn't make it work for this contest. Before
SS-SSB I'll have to check out just how high you have to be in the band.
Sunday afternoon I gave running a try on 15M and it went well for about 1 1/2
hrs (59 Q's). Moving to 40 the run was really good. 1 1/2 hrs (109 Q's).
At times I had so many people calling me on the same freq I couldn't make out
even partial calls. I will no long complain about DXpedition CW ops who are
silent for 2-3 minutes while they wait for the pileup to dwindle enough to copy
a partial call.
Summary - great experience and looking forward to SS-SSB.
