Comments:
For the first time on this contest, I feared the fatigue because the last 3
weeks were very busy with work with sometimes +80 hours/week. The advantage is
that, fatigue helping, I managed to sleep for a few hours before the contest
(usually the adrenaline wins...).
In the end, it went rather well even if I took 1 hour more break than planned
and that, at times, I let myself run on one radio without necessarily chasing
all the possible QSOs (in outside the multis) on the second transceiver which
had the consequence of not reaching my score objective.
I focused on the multis but the total number of QSOs could have been at least a
good hundred higher.
Finally the number of multis worked from 80 to 15 m is rather similar to the one
I usually contact but the total number is greater, thanks to 10 m more
productive than in the last years.
Only about twenty multis could not be contacted, either because the propagation
was insufficient to make contact with 100 W (as on 10 m), or because some
stations are deaf as stones (on 40 m for example and this whatever when you call
them and even when they're CQing alone for long minutes)...
Despite this, the score is similar to last year (with 30,000 points less).
Usually, I make an average of 90 to 100 QSOs (in S&P only) the first hour
but then, after 5 minutes, I had only made one contact, it started badly... The
rest of the contest was went well, no technical problem.
I don't know if it came from me or from the propagation but the QSO rate was
quite low on Saturday afternoon for a few hours (fatigue must have had something
to do with this phenomenon because the propagation didn't look bad...).
When I prepared for the contest, I told myself that I would not make my first
break as long as there's propagation with NA on 20m during the night of Saturday
to Sunday, which meant that it could involve up to 30 hours continuously on
air.
It was a bit ambitious because, while my brain and the hands were still
operational, my eyes stung so much that I threw in the towel at 22.00z on
Saturday (earlier than other years...). So I took my first break (it was to be
the only one) with a resumption of emissions 3 hours later. After sunrise, the
hourly average was starting to drop dangerously and fatigue was again felt. I
then judged that it was more appropriate to stop again for 30 minutes if I
wanted to go the distance until the end.
About the propagation, I was finally able to cross the symbolic bar of 100 DXCC
on one band (20 m). I hope that this "step" will survive the log
checking...
- The 80m was very conducive to contacts with the US/VE the first
night. the 25
states contacted (for 32 stations in total) during the contest on this band were
all worked at this time.
The use of the beverage (120 m to West) gave good results that night (even on 40
m).
Contacts with the Caribbean/North of South America were, for their part, perhaps
more difficult than usual.
- The 40m gave excellent results (thanks to the 3 elements which
continues to
amaze me after 1 year of use). The last hour of the contest provided impressive
reports on the US (44 VE/W contacted just at that time).
- The 20m was rather usual for this season but, as it was pointed out
for a
little while, the best signals on North Americas appeared when the night had
fallen.
- 15m gave good DX results and it was similar to the propagation we
experienced
at this contest last year.
This band also allowed me, as usual, to contact many fairly close multis (C3,
all UK, HB, LX, and so on) via backscatter when the stations in run are not
disturbed by neighboring frequencies.
- 10m: although expected because observed in recent days, this band
experienced
some openings. Little prolific on Saturday, it was much better on Sunday with
finally a timid but real opening on North America (only one state contacted on
Saturday and 15 more on Sunday afternoon). a total of 21 Americans are in the
log on this band.
14 stations were contacted on 5 bands, which had not happened for a long time.
On the positive side of this weekend, I have noticed, for the first time in
recent years, that very few OM call directly with the report sent (technique
taken from FT8); it must be said that learning RTTY, for OM coming from FT8, can
take a little time given the lack of RTTY observed outside of contest...
And the negative side was that some stations (very few but always the same
ones), behaved like morons, with incessant calls, on the pile up when a rare/new
multi appeared on the air.
Finally, it was still a tiring contest but still very exciting.
Thanks for the QSOs!
