September weekend only. 43 QSOs total; 38 on Saturday from Tunnel Park
(EN62vt41tm) in Holland, MI, where I was very graciously hosted by Doug(K8DP),
his daughter Grace(KE8RJU) and his wife Carrie(K8CLP), then 5 more Qs on Sunday
from two locations closer to the home QTH in Illinois.
Interesting phenomenon on Saturday that our group was able to contact two groups
to the north of us in Michigan (near Empire, MI) where the direct path was over
land and appeared to be blocked. Initially, we were hearing the operators on the
Wisconsin side of Lake Michigan when they had their antennas pointed at the
stations to the north (and the Wisconsin stations were REALLY strong when they
pointed at us). Then we started hearing the more northerly Michigan stations as
they completed contacts with the stations on the Wisconsin side when their
antennas were aimed toward those stations. Steve, KB8VAO, called me on the cell
phone and we interactively peaked up - both of our peaks were when we were aimed
out over the lake, to the northwest from us at Tunnel Park and to the southwest
for the groups to the north. Contacts were easily completed on SSB, no signs of
multi-path and definitely didn't sound scattery.
Experiences like this are memorable, even if whatever atmospheric/geographic
conditions made these contacts possible cannot be definitely explained, part of
why we 'amateurs' ply our hobby to see what can be achieved.
Personal thanks to the Papay family (Doug, Grace and Carrie) for encouraging me
to come meet and work with them at Tunnel Park, and to Pete, K9PW, for continued
use of his '2nd generation' 10 GHz station
Thanks to all who participated in this year's ARRL 10 GHz & Up Contest and
to the ARRL for their continued support of this event.
73, JK
