Comments:

Over the weekend we experienced conditions from OK to non-existent. There
really were two contests. The first one ended about 1700z Saturday with 893 Qs
and the second one ended with the end of the contest with 200 more hard earned
Qs. There was no 15 meter opening after 0300z Saturday. There were no QSOs after
1300 Sunday on any band! We stayed with it the whole time.

160/80: N6RO
I may be the only one who had fun this weekend! 80m was the best ever: 54 Sat
AM, 62 Sun AM, with 52 mults. Propagation was good to JA both sessions Good
enough to hear stations through the S9+ static crashes, and two different
radars: a S7 chirp existing from 3732 to 3832, and the usual buzzer with two
peaks centered on the two JA windows, with a null in between (3780). To me, this
suggests intentional jamming by a few Far East countries of ham contests. Using
two slices on the 6600, I could coordinate activity between 80 and 160 in the
last 90 minutes of the opening, netting 4 Qs and mults on 160. The new 80m
dipole made the day!

40: FIRST NIGHT: WX5S
40m on Friday started out less than average, and I was really working for some
of the Q's. Didn't think I would make 400 at the pace things were going. But
half way thru the night, cndx improved, noise went down and I was able to hear
better, I think that was when K went from 5 to 4 and I think A dropped to 8 at
one point. I hand one half hour when things were "rocking". After
sunrise on Sat morning, I was thinking that Sat night would be a better prop
night because condx were improving. But obviously some next blast of bad news
arrived from the Sun and reversed that improvement trend - mucking up the
geomagnetic fields even more. K=6 and A=25 is pretty bad. Sometimes radio is
the "art of the possible" - I am sorry to hear that not much was
possible on day #2.
Overall I think activity was off. Very few JA's were spotted. I am not sure
that I ever was spotted on the network. Hi rate time last year was start of
twilight in Tokyo. Peak time this year was at end of twilight in Tokyo.
Plenty of local noise problems and that woodpecker thing made an appearance too!
Noise is one of the predominant factors for the low bands. I was surprised to
see Ken doing so well on 80m. I wanted to pass some loud guys who I knew had
ants to 80m, but didn't have much luck with that. Normally for a pass down band
to work, I have to be hearing them pretty well.

40 SECOND NIGHT: W6DMW
It was a great lesson in propagation and how things can be absolutely wrecked
due to the things we cannot control. The first hour netted zero results and
without us knowing it that was the beginning of the end except somehow for 80m
(see N6ROs notes). There are about 77 qsos the second night and they seemed to
be evenly spread out from 11pm to 6am local time. Very few CQ’ing stations
heard so it was a lot of pressing F1. Still a good time as always! Very glad
Matt had such great results on the first night. Thanks for letting me be
involved and thanks to those that were out there!

20: FIRST DAY K3EST
The band was slow to open at the start and finally blew open at about 0330z and
remained good until 0730. It was open to JA and Asiatic Russia. However, not
many contacts SEA or China. The Saturday morning opening was good to SEA. China
never was good and very few Korean stations.

20 SECOND DAY K3EST AND KK6PXT. The solar storm hit and the second day was not
good…that is an understatement. The late evening opening was greatly reduced
and no QSOs were made on 20 from 0600z to the end of the contest. Greg, KK6PXT
joined in the JA run Saturday night and had his first ever JA run! A FB job.

15 N6WM AND N6RO
Had fun Friday night (SAT am UTC) with active stations at start of contest.
Thanks to Ken N6RO for coverage until 0045 when I got stuck in labor day
traffic. Activity and propagation improved as the grey line approached leading
to a nice run through 0300. Then the band closed due to a solar storm, not to
re-open for the rest of the contest. Thanks to all the Asia stations that made
it through.

10 = NOTHING
