Comments:
A fun contest where you can work everyone and don’t have to shipwreck
your sleeping schedule over a full 48-hours.
We decided to throw our hat into the multi-single, mixed-mode, high-power
category. We split up the 24-hour period into six 4-hour periods of
alternating operation.
Conditions started out fairly good, but someone told the K-index that it was a
major contest weekend so it soon elevated to 3. Even though it mitigated a bit
later on, it put a bit of a damper on what could have been really good
conditions. As it was, we managed a few contacts on 10, and the other bands
were "average" much of the time.
The exception was late Saturday evening, when 20 and 15 remained open almost
all night. Mitch had two 100+ hours into Europe/Asia on 20 between 11 PM
Saturday and 1 AM Sunday (local times). For the remainder of the contest,
40 generated reasonable activity, mostly into Asia.
With only a single transmitter active, and three bands (40/20/15) simultaneously
active,
it can be a challenge to know which band to focus on. The
choice of band/mode becomes more strategic in this one because of the
10-minute rule. There were times when one could conceivably switch bands or
modes to snag a multiplier, but with rates over 1-per minute and each
multiplier being worth around 7-8 Qs, you really needed to be sure you’d pick
up more than 1 multiplier to pay for the 10-minute hit.
This was especially true for the late-night shift where repeated checks
of 160/80 yielded only a single multiplier to be had making the "10-minute
prison"
a poor choice.
On the remote operation front, it seems like there is always something new that
raises its head. This weekend was no exception: I struggled with several
issues which interfered with my ability to utilize live audio over remote.
Fortunately, I had assistance from the imperterbable "Robby" (R0BOT)
who
faithfully dictated pre-recorded audio as soul-less, but effective work-around.
Otherwise I would have probably had to leave all the SSB operation to Mitch.
We had a good time, enjoyed hearing all the other regulars (and competing
live on the online scoreboard), and got more rest than on a typical M/2
effort.
Details follow...
