Comments:
Lots of Es skip throughout the contest--and lots of competition, too. It was
tough making 100 watts heard through all the powerhouse signals, but summoning
patience and persistence got me a fair number of QSOs and grids.
I took screen shots every hour I was operating and noticed that even though my
FM18 grid was not always the beneficiary of Es skip, some part of the U.S. was.
This contest did not lack for skip. A few times the Es connected FM18 with EU,
but I tended to come in on the tail end after doing other household stuff. Early
afternoon Sunday I did work the U.K., France, the Netherlands, plus Newfoundland
and Guadeloupe. Late Sunday afternoon I saw a few U.S. stations working JAs but
I could not receive them.
By Sunday evening the foreign-aiming Es had closed but then a big one opened in
the central U.S., enabling the collection of many new U.S. grids. I could have
worked more than I did but our "city lot" (1/5 acre) limits my Yagi's
placement to only 30' away from the side of our two-story house. Consequently I
found myself firing my 100w of RF into the corner of the house whenever the
needed direction was in the 200-310 degree range.
Interestingly, there seemed to be a bit more CW and SSB activity in this VHF
contest than in previous ones, possibly encouraged by ARRL's new analog-only
category. Fully 25 of my 85 QSOs (29%) were made via CW, 8 by SSB (9%), and 52
(61%) by digital. Nice change. Thank you, ARRL.
