Comments:
Ouch! That was tough.
I don’t know which was worse: the let-down when promising propagation fell
apart the day of the contest or how tough it became to slog along and keep BIC
in the face of lack-luster conditions and below-normal rates.
As has been the case for a number of major contest weekends of late, Murphy
zapped the ionosphere, making mischief of what should have been a ton of fun.
Well, it was still "fun" (in quotes), but it quickly became evident
that we
were not in any position to best our M-2 efforts from last year (9.9M as KW7Y)
or SSB earlier this year (9.3M). When the smoke cleared, we were fortunate to
finish with half the score of those previous efforts.
The K index told the story: 4 at the start, then up to 5, giving false
encouragement by dropping down to 4, then to 3, 2, 1, . . . back up to 2
(oops), then settling in at 3 to haunt us for the remainder of the contest.
Meanwhile the SFI dropped.
Although we had some bright spots (short runs overnight into Asia on 40, late
Saturday evening into Europe and Asia on 20, much of our effort was S&P to
try
and boost lackluster prefix count (lack of good EU runs), mixed with running
what we could (mostly state-side for 1 pt each).
The high-spot in the weekend was that since Murphy was distracted messing
with electrons in the upper atmospheric regions, he didn’t seem to have time
to serve up the normal technology riddles that often beset remote operation.
Other than one short hiccup where I lost audio for a few minutes, my remote
connection held good. Mitch had his K3 report some battery issues and turn
off once, but he quickly determined what was wrong (power supply) and got
it rectified. Overall, it was "all quiet on the technology front."
We enjoyed following the live scores of familiar rivals on
contestonlinescore.com
(https://contestonlinescore.com/scoreboard/?contest_id=69). We missed our
typical competition against N6RO and KT7E—both of whom were M/M.
Instead, we found motivated from VC7M (Orca Club, operating out of Vancouver
Island) and KK6P—both of whom quickly pulled away and left us in their
rear-view mirror. Excellent job, guys.
In keeping with our advancing age ("wisdom"?) and the conditions,
we didn’t push things all that hard. N1MM reports our on-time as 45:25
hours, with at least one transmitter active: not a very helpful metric when
operating M/2. A more meaningful statistic: we kept both transmitters active
70% of the time (33.5 out of 48 hours). Less BIC time than typical, but
lackluster conditions dissuaded greater dedication.
