Comments:
I don’t know why, but unlike most years I wasn’t super-motivated to do this
contest. I thought I might do a casual effort, but it didn’t turn out that
way. I guess I like WPX CW so much that it’s hard to leave the radio, even
when conditions are poor! I was woefully under-prepared, but it didn’t seem to
matter much, except that lack of planning let to me taking too much break time
at the wrong times (one night I spent an more than an hour making dinner for my
wife and me instead of running the low bands!)
Aside from missing 2 ½ hours of operating time, which mostly hurt my numbers on
40, the poor conditions took a toll on 15 here at the higher latitudes. The band
never really opened on Day 1, though I was able to make up a fair amount of
ground on Day 2. It was a strange contest, in that conditions were bad at the
start (K index or 5), improved a lot in the middle (K index of 1), then
deteriorated about halfway through Day 2 (K index of 3). Usually it’s two good
days, two bad days, or one of each.
Really missed the Russians and Ukrainians. Honestly, I had forgotten about the
ban on Russian stations and thought I wasn’t working any because of the poor
conditions. Then I noticed DXLog counted zero points for the eight Russians I
worked who must not have gotten the memo. When I realized what was going on, it
made me very sad. Not for my score or contest fun, but for the thousands of hams
and millions of their fellow countrymen who are affected by the terrible war in
Ukraine.
For the record, last year I worked 880 Russian stations and 139 Ukrainian
stations, for a total of 1,019 contacts. That was 30% of the Qs for the whole
contest. Aside from the leaders, I’m sure this and the poor conditions had a
significant impact on most QSO totals. Still, it’s amazing how many Qs were
filled in by hams in other counties. Nevertheless, I hope someday this will be a
distant bad memory and we’ll have a truly worldwide event.
