Although I only logged 181 contacts, I figured I would do this short write-up
anyway - mainly for myself so I could go back and read it down the road.
This was my first time participating in CQ WPX SSB. Though I've been licensed
since 2004, I never delved into contesting seriously. But it's something I
recently decided that I want to learn more about and get better at, and so I
figured that this would be a good start.
Living in a second-floor apartment, my biggest limitation by far is antenna
space. The company I rent from has been nice enough to let me have antennas on
both the (tiny) front balcony and the (slightly less tiny, but still small) back
balcony, so I'm lucky in that regard, but still fairly limited in what I can
do.
Equipment used for this contest was an Icom IC-7300 running barefoot at 100W.
The primary antenna was an MFJ-1782 30m-10m mag loop (with in-shack tuning
controller), although I did take some time to cut a dipole for 15m and tossed it
over the railing of the balcony. Performance seemed about the same as the loop,
but it made switching bands easier, because I could leave the mag loop tuned to
20m (for example) and not have to spend time tuning it when I decided to move to
15m.
Of course, with a subpar antenna setup and running barefoot, I could not
feasibly run a frequency, so the entirety of my on-air time was spent hunting
for people calling CQ and responding. I was fairly surprised with some of the
contacts that I made. Towards the very end of the contest, I decided to try 10m
and made a few contacts there.
I didn't operate the whole allotted time. There was a hamfest in the area on
Saturday which I went to (and got some good deals, mind you :-) ).
I used the N3FJP logger in a Windows VM (atop Gentoo Linux) for logging. Picked
up some new DXCC entities as well!
= Improvements for next time =
Planned:
- Need to get a desk mic and foot pedal PTT. Using the hand mic made logging
more annoying.
Already did, post-contest:
- Got a number pad for typing serials more quickly -- my normal keyboard is a
tenkeyless and this was annoying.
- I have ordered an Isotron 40m antenna. This will hopefully let me do some
night time contesting on 40 in the future.
