Comments:
Living in the black hole for NA propagation, my strategy for the WPX contest is
to focus a lot of energy on working stateside, especially 40m. If the
propagation gods favour us with an opening to Europe or Asia, then that is a
bonus.
Friday night the conditions on 40m were outstanding. I was able to find a run
frequency and hold it for over 3 hours. with decent rates. When I finally lost
the frequency, I moved to 80m and the conditions were equally good (if you can
ever use good and 80m in the same sentence). Both bands were relatively low
noise and I had decent runs all over NA. The europeeans CQ'ed in my face for
the most part on 40.
Saturday turned pretty dismal quickly. Firts it was difficult to hold a
frequency on 20m. If I pointed stateside, a EU station wopould move in and soon
he had control of the frequency. If I pointed at EU, well the NA stations would
move in. Conditions to EU wer very disturbed and never really opened strong.
Only worked about half of what I could hear with the 100 W. If was much the same
except the North /South path was very weak. From VE4, I could hear only esp
level images of NA stations and even South Americans were very weak.
Absolutetely no Asians werwe heard. I was holding my own against CF2Z and WP3C
on the live scoreboard up until about noon Saturday. They then clearly found
openings I was only wishing for and the three way race became a two station race
after that. I could never hope to reel in the 200 additional multipliers they
found.
I had to take 4.6 hours off to attend a family function, and that made things
even worse.
Sunday conditions were much much better. 20m opened to Europe nicely but Just
couldnt hold a run frequency. South America was strong on 10 and 15 and unlike
Saturday, 15m opened to the United States.
A lot of CQ'ing, A lot of lost frequency battle, A lot of calls that went
unanswered. Such is the fate of a 100W black hole station. But it was still
fun...right?
Thanks for the Q's and your patience!
