As always, special thanks to Tim / N6WIN (and Tina + the kids) for always being
a fb host at ND7K! Door to door service from the airport, excellent food, and a
meticulously maintained superstation — who could ask for more?
This was my second attempt at a RTTY contest at ND7K — it went better than the
first attempt, though still not quite being the result that I was hoping for.
We’re still analyzing what didn’t go well, but we have a few ideas for
investigating. Congratulations to K7RL for an awesome performance, more or less,
across the board in mults and Qs there’s almost exactly a 14% difference
across all bands — it can’t be all propagation and the station seemed to be
working really well all things considered. I’ll be looking for some sort of
loss in the system or operator inefficiency somewhere that I’m not accounting
for. It’s been a good contest season of RTTY for me overall, so no complaints.
Of course, thanks to everyone who sent their scores into the live score pages
— I successfully managed to avoid looking at it throughout the contest (a new
policy that I’ve had in effect since WWRTTY), but the station hosts especially
like watching and several other people as well. I’ll stop short of using the
word “insecure” to describe those that are still hiding their scores (or
band summaries), but I’m really not convinced that it’s providing anyone
else with strategic advantage (or, in other words, if you’re using other
people’s scores to change your operating, you’re doing it wrong.)
Things almost got off to a bit of a rough start, before kickoff, one of my
radios was having trouble putting power out consistently, but luckily I was able
to borrow a local rig and swap it out before the contest started.
But the conditions were still decent, night and day difference from last year
— very nice 10m opening (though seemed a little better north of me) and 15
meters was seemingly in very good condition.
Due to the compressed timeline, I wasn’t able to set up everything I wanted at
the start of the contest, but during the off times I kept adding functionality.
I started out with 2BSIQ only, then eventually I added in-band capability to
each radio utilizing the beverage antennas for full-duplex/asynchronously-cued
in-band QSOs for effectively SO4R. It worked well, but it was at the borderline
of information overload. I think if I had spent some time working out some
keyboard macros I could have managed it a bit better, because as it stood, there
were a few instances where I “left someone hanging” on one of the other
radios trying to sort out a QSO on a different radio. I think this also a
general problem with RTTY 2BSIQ though — one of the thing that tends to happen
is that no matter what you do, you end up in situations where the QSO goes wrong
on the first radio and the second radio has a bad pause, even if you’re really
used to sorting it out quickly (and arguably, I’ve had plenty of practice.)
Anyway, I had a great time, and all things considered, this is not a bad result
at all — I’ve got some homework for the contest off-season to look into and
3830 is as good as place as any to note it all down.
Vy 73, and we’ll see you in the next one.
Bill/W9KKN
Host note: Really happy to have Bill here to make NAQP RTTY his ND7K specific
event. Post contest analysis found 10 watts of loss in a transfer switch that we
use for many operations here. We should have bypassed that with his use of the
Flex slices for inband when thinking of a low power contest. Computing power is
a bit on the low side for his decoders as this station was built with CW and SSB
in mind. I'm sure Bill will be back with solutions for the next one and I'll be
looking forward to seeing what he comes up with! Great job by Mitch / K7RL who's
been improving his station hardware and efficiencies this past summer... it's
been showing this contest season for sure! 73, Tim / N6WIN

Green Heron Everyware switching worked great driving OK2ZAW stack matches, K7NV
prop-pitches, and 80m Tornado tuner. The K6AM Skunkworkz Seekrit black boxes
continue to be a reliable solution when the more basic brains at ND7K are in
need.
