Our core 160m CW Team has been operating together for over 35 years. Gene
Walsh, N2AA was one of the original team members. We miss enjoying his very
special brand of camaraderie on contest weekends. This year we were pleased to
honor Gene's memory by using his call, N2AA during the CQ160 CW and we hope to
continue to do so for years to come.
Station preparations were made more complex this week when we learned a major
winter storm would be arriving curing the contest. As many of you may now know
the station is located on the immediate coast of Barnegat Bay 20 miles north of
Atlantic City in Southern New Jersey. We had to prepare for possible power
outages and even the possibility of being temporarily marooned by the predicted
deep snow at our isolated location. Several team members opted to forego
attending. The storm performed as predicted by the weather service, leaving
behind 18 inches (50 cm) of snow driven by 40 mph winds which created local
blizzard conditions for several hours. Fortunately we never lost power and had
time to dig out the vehicles when the storm ended Saturday afternoon.
Here are a few numbers:
309 Ten Pointers and 87 Five pointers First Night
84 Ten Pointers and 15 Five pointers Second Night
393 Total Ten Pointers ... down from 446 last year and not much more than half
of the 726 Ten Pointers in 2020.
EU signals were plentiful the first night and there was a very good period of
signal enhancement at EU sunrise. The second night propagation was
exceptionally poor, EU signals were very weak and those we managed to work were
at the noise floor.
We had over three hundred fewer total QSOs than last year's 1814. The Covid
effect has diminished leaving us all with lower activity overall.
125 total multipliers ... up from 114 last year but still far below the 147
worked in 2020.
Worked all 50 states after completing a somewhat labored contact with KL7SB the
second night. JA3YBK was our last contact at sunrise on Sunday morning.
Missed five VE Provinces: LB, MB, NT, YT and NU. Countries heard but not worked:
3V8, 4U1A, OH0, TA and TF.
Other Observations:
Static levels were somewhat elevated as expected during the coastal storm Friday
evening but no as bad as we'd expected. All of the antennas weathered the storm
without damage.
The routine ritual of walking beverages before each contest was completed during
a work party earlier this week. We now find less physical activity on setup day
helps everyone's endurance. Age is catching up with us.
Signals from EU were noticeably stronger the first night with a significant
sunrise enhancement. West Coast conditions were also better the first night as
well. Conditions the second night were for lack of a better word 'terrible'
with weak signals coming from all directions. There was no EU sunrise
enhancement.
Contest activity was normally intense during peak hours each night with the
highest concentration of stations between 1810 and 1850. We opted to CQ higher
in the band for several hours to stay clear of the chaos.
We had only one minor equipment malfunction. The run XCVR developed a connection
problem in the RX signal path to the beverage antennas which rendered the unit
mostly deaf for several hours the first night. The problem was temporarily
solved by having the run operator listen on the 'slave' XCVR that normally
monitors the runner. Problems we had with TX array performance experienced last
season have been completely resolved.
The growth in Scoreboard use is obvious and we find following the efforts of
fellow Multi-op teams and Single Op competitors enhances the contest experience.
It was fascinating to watch the horse races develop and leads pass back and
forth.
Congrats to the K1LZ Team for an outstanding effort and to the K3LR Team for a
spirited competition.
Thanks to all the stations who called us. We hope you had as much fun as our
team did.
We greatly appreciate the continued hosting each year of our 160 meter contest
activities by the owners of WYRS-FM.
Hope to hear everyone again next 160 season.
73,
John, W2GD
