Comments:
Never found Wyoming. No W7 on 40. During the weekly CWTs I can tell the
weaknesses and they really show in the larger contests. No SO2R means missing a
lot of multipliers. I need alternate antennas for when the band quickly
changes. 80 was pretty effective, and a G station called in and wondered why I
was in their DX window – the band was packed with USA here! So I could do
better by phasing some different antennas to get some high angles. Second pix
shows how close the aerial spraying comes to my antennas. I guess the farmers
have a different interpretation of aerial spraying compared to my spraying RF at
different angles. All my receiving antennas are down, (first pix) but the 80
meter antenna was pretty good for receiving on 160. Never found short skip on
20. So it was particularly difficult, but I have antennas assembled on the
ground that might help. It would be fun to do this from a well-outfitted
station.
I’ve only done this contest a couple times and it’s hard to tell when the
lulls are for taking breaks. The W7s get on the low bands quite late, so you
have to save some time for them at about 10:30 pm, even though the bands are
open that way about 7:30 pm. I think they are still running stations on the
high bands at that time, yet 20 had folded for us at that time.
Best full hour was 143. There were some really good short bursts. I had a few
instances of 6 QSOs a minute and one 7 a minute which makes me wonder if 420 an
hour is possible under ideal conditions. I’m ready to go on a DXpedition, but
15 would have to sparkle and time would be lost in tuning a pile up. The good
runs were on 40 meters which was surprising because I am generally ineffective
here. Peak 10 minute rate was 222/ hour.
It’s pretty interesting to work so many people that I had never worked before,
and at the same time there were lots of CW Ops who were active. Publicity must
be really good.
