Comments:
First time participant in this contest, only had a short time to operate as
well, but made the best of it. Started off with vertical on 20, using Wolf River
Coil system. Noise level was around s7-s8. I tried calling cq a few times, and
could not get a run going. I am not much of a S&P op, but knew I was going
to have to resort to this to get any Qs on the band. After not breaking several
pile-ups, i started thinking on what to do. I do not have any permanent antennas
set up at home QTH, so I am limited on what i have to work with. After a few
minutes of thought, I got in my Go-kit and grabbed out a Linked Dipole I had
built last summer. Long story short, I ditched the vertical and put the dipole
up as an inverted vee at about 30' at feed point. After that, I had some better
results on 20, but noise was still high. Swapped bands to 40 at that point and
started calling CQ. Had a small pileup that was short-lived and had to go back
to S&P. Got a couple of mults on 15 just looking around, which was good to
see activity on the band.
All-in-all I took away with one thing: make sure to have multiple antenna
options, and have those deployed BEFORE the contest begins. I spent about 35
minutes fiddling with a line trying to get it over a tree limb in the front
yard.
