Comments:
Special thanks Tom and Midge for the hospitality and use of the station!
This is normally one of TV Bob’s contests at W7RN and thanks to our favorite
pandemic, this year (and last year), he decided that it was probably a good idea
not to make the trip.
Unfortunately, not all of us are so wise it would seem, so when K5RC gave me a
call and offered to let me take a swing at it, I couldn’t really say no.
The goal this year was to improve on last year, and I would say that goal was
achieved, however, I still have a lot to work with CW accuracy and such. Log
checking will be cruel, and sorry if you caught me in one of those
deer-in-headlight moments, equal parts altitude sickness, fatigue, and
inexperience. I started the contest off with an ill-conceived 2BSIQ experiment
that quickly needed to be paused, but eventually I was able to get it working a
few times.
I told myself I would stop watching the scoreboards during single op efforts,
but Sunday got the best of me. I had an enjoyable battle with K6LL, N5ZO, K4AB
and others in the category.
How were the bands?
10m didn’t happen, though I was able to get spotted weakly on the east coast,
my dream of working a bunch of mobile stations in W4 was not realized.
15m — Good activity during the contest. It was really just about as good as
20m, perhaps with not as many people there. Of course, 6/6/6/6 OWAs @6500ft
elevation help significantly, but the stations on 15 really weren’t all that
less loud than the ones on 20.
20m — Nothing amazing going on, a lot of Europeans calling me though
40m — Made most of the QSOs here,
80m — The W7RN 3-el is just supremely loud, but there’s also a dipole that
fills in local stations that is often very helpful.
As is normal in SS, Sunday was a tough slog, if I had to do anything different
in the off time strategy, I would have probably tried to move more off time
throughout Sunday. I took a bunch of 30 minute breaks, but as low as the rates
seemed Saturday night, I feel like they were better than most of Sunday.
