Comments:
Last OHQP was 2014, and I managed 118K raw. Pretty dismal performance this year
by comparison. In 2014 I was younger, at a different QTH, had likely better
antennas and wasn't surrounded by a forest of tall trees and a shale wall. On
the other hand, in a contest where [I was thinking I] I should be working
in-state and nearby states it shouldn't have mattered. That likely means that
I made poor choices of what bands/modes to be on at any given time. I do recall
for one reason or another feeling like I needed to be on a band where I could
find the most in-state stations. In retrospect I don't think I paid attention
to that in previous OHQPs. I probably should have been CQing on 20m at some
point during the day and should have CQd more on 40m after the in-state activity
started to dwindle there.
I didn't do nearly as well picking out the mobile ops this year. They were
spotted. I checked. I just wasn't hearing them as well.
80m static crashes all evening are something I'd rather forget. Had 3 or 4
dupes.
Had a lot of fun, worked a lot of familiar calls and some not so familiar.
Memorable QSOs were with KA3KSP, W3HKK and AD8J.
Thanks to all of those that worked me, and a special thanks to all of the
mobiles/rovers that traverse Ohio handing out Qs during the OHQP.
Mike / AA8IA
