Temporary setup.
The main idea behind this operation was to check out the location potential,
being pretty much untested on the high bands (10 to 40) besides simulations.
Yet, I took it seriously on the operating side as well.
Came late (09.30z) to the station on Sat morning due to traffic jam on the A14
motorway.
It ended up in a rush to setup two complete stations from scratch, including all
the switching and filtering.
At the very same time Fabio and Giancarlo kindly took care of completing some
antenna tasks.
At 11.56z I was ready to go.
Then it was 24 hrs of two radio operating fun, mixing classic style (1xRUN +
1xS&P) with dual-run (2xCW and 1xSSB + 1xCW).
Once again I confirmed to myself it is time to upgrade from SO2R.
To adapt an "old days" mantra to nowadays: if you are NOT cqing on two
radios you are losing!
On the other hand, there is desperate need for S&Ping during dual-run,
especially if you are not in a dx location or semi-rare EU country.
After the contest I had time to relax a bit and take a look at the scenic views
over the Po Valley, Adriatic Sea and San Marino (T7).
Then we took down the station, packed everything and off to I3 to watch the EURO
CUP match.
QTH: hilltop, 440m asl, steep terrain to all directions
SETUP:
2 x RTXs
10-15-20: F12 5BA @10m
40: slooping dipole to North hanging from 17m tower
80: 1/4wl vertical
160: inv.vee dipole apex @17m
BVGs were available but I anticipated using them it would only lead to moments
of frustration with 100w, hence some RG-213 cables were re-routed to fed the
temporary TX ants.
"Sadly" for me the noise level on the 80m 1/4wl vertical was very low
(S1), so I had armchair copy of untouchable stuff like CX1AA, L21RCA, NU1AW/5,
PYs, etc (all S-9 on the meter).
Best ears award goes to Alex HC2AO for pulling me out so fastly on 80m and
staying with me until we completed despite DA0HQ jumped on the QRG with non-stop
calling.
ITU Zone 28 is the most active one in EU, so it is the worst place in EU to
operate IARU in terms of pt/qs ratio.
Tried to maximize 3 and 5 pointers and struggled to keep 3 pt/qs ratio,
eventually failed in the morning as it did drop down as expected to 2,79 pt/qs.
Unfortunately we had no time to put up a 2nd triband yagi.
The way 10-15-20m were open NW+NE coupled with dual-run capabilities it would
have yield at least 300/400 Qs more.
Tnx to Fabio, Giancarlo, Vincenzo & others I may have forgotten and that one
way or another contributed to the success of this operation.
