At the risk of sounding completely off my rocker, I have to admit something that
is both hilarious and an epic fail. You all are going to like this. So, I load
up all the equipment heading down to the contest site after work Friday ready
for a contest. All good so far, right? This is where it goes sideways - I
thought this last weekend was ARRL DX CW :-). I got all set up and get the radio
turned on at 00:45z ready to rock in the cw portion of 40 meters and hear a slow
speed QSO in progress around 7020. Uh oh..... tuned around the bottom 25kc of 40
and its pretty much dead. I thought man, this is strange, something is up. I
look at the contest calendar and see WPX RTTY going on. So, quick switch of the
plan and to get N1MM set up for the contest. I still can't believe I did that! I
swear I am losing it these days.

I had not run the new FTDX101D in RTTY at all yet let, alone with N1MM. Luckily
I had N1MM configured from my FTDX3000 and it worked perfectly right off the bat
with no issues! Started making Q's just before 01:00.
With the recent ice storms, swr a little wacky on some of the antennas but
nothing a tuner couldn't fix. I have all fixed antennas at this point so nothing
to freeze up there.

Conditions were ok for the most part, hopefully a bit better for the ARRL DX
CW.
Band by band:
10- Just a few SA q's.
15- Short western EU openings late both mornings. SA and west coast were
reasonable of course. Didn't spend a ton of time here.
20- Real good conditions both mornings on 20m through EU and even into Asia.
Worked several VK long path. Spent a fair amount of time here with 10 and 15
being relatively subdued to say the least.
40- Pretty good to EU both evenings and late into the night. I hung out on 40 as
much as I could racking up the higher point QSO's.
80- not all the best, seemed a bit noisy. Beverages iced up and hanging low.
Didn't get a chance to walk them before the contest. My SW and NW beverages
seemed a bit down on RX, I bet the ice storm knocked a few branches down on
them. Need to get corrected before next weekend! Not too many 6 pointers.
Normally a good place to work lots of stateside stations and rack up the unique
prefixes but just never got any big runs going.

Had a blast in spite of the challenges at the beginning of the contest. Was fun
using the contest club call N4SS, and will use it next weekend as well. I love
that call on CW! Hopefully the ice storms aren't too bad this week or it may
cause big problems for ARRL DX next weekend.

Best 73's all!
N4SS
