Comments:
I started building my station at this location in 2001 and WM5R has
operated every 10 meter contest from here since 2019 with the
exception of one year. That year no one did 10 meters from this
station. Since he was to coming to the station this year I decided to
get on and give the contest a go. I have not done the ARRL 10 meter
contest since before 2001. It was always one of my favorite contests
and I have done well in the SSB only category from a number of
different locations over the years. The first contest I ever entered
was the 1977 ARRL 10 meter contest. I entered as WB5VZL/T as an all
CW entry as a tech (we did not have phone on 10m in 1977). I made 22
contacts. My station was a Kenwood TS-520 to an indoor dipole strung
down the hall of our ground floor apartment. I then did some multiops
from various stations including mine in Temple when I finally got a
beam up. These were with WD5BIK(sk) and KE5C. In the 1980s and early
1990s I did the contest from the N5AU station in Rockwall Texas. And I
did well with the step up in antennas. When W5KFT and I put up some
antennas on his family ranch in 1993 I started doing the contest from
that station and also did well. Sometimes conditions are world wide
and other times it is like doing a VHF contest and a few years we were
lucky to manage 400 contacts for 36 hours of CQing on the band.
This year I was expecting more of a VHF contest - and that is pretty
much what it was but Friday night was very different than any other
10m contest I can recall - even in all the years that WM5R was coming
here. Normally Friday night you get an hour or two of propagation and
then the rate falls off and you work some locals and go to sleep even
at the peak of the sunspot cycle. What you hope for is some Eskip so
that you can get some contacts in the log on Friday to add to the rest
of the weekend and maybe you will get some Eskip that others miss
because the band dies and then an hour later it is open for 2 or 3
hours of good Eskip. The best I can recall is having 300-400 contacts
on Friday night. 400 would be a really good start to the contest and
you would be very happy. This past weekend was the best start ever.
The band was not very good at the start and I was not getting much in
the way of answers - and was even doing some S&P to try to work folks
but then it started to open with a bit of Eskip and then it got better
and better and it was still open to places past midnight local time.
I think I ran out of folks to work before the band died. When I went
to bed on Friday night / Saturday morning I had a bit over 950
contacts in the log and I had worked all the US states except for AK
HI MT and WA. I never did hear or work AK or HI but did pick up MT
and WA over the weekend. The rate was crazy good with two hours over
200/hr. That was great fun. The rest of the weekend was more like a
normal 10m contest at this point in the cycle. I did not work much
DX. No Asia or Europe was heard or worked from here. I didn't work
anyone in the last 2.5 hours so that made for a slow drag to the
finish.
One thing that seemed to be around all weekend and was even bad on
Friday night was some very fast QSB. Sometimes it would make copying
stations really hard. When W3IP called in it took forever for me to
understand his call sign the QSB was so fast it was making his signal
hard to understand even though the peaks were not that weak. It was
weird. Sunday the wind started blowing hard and kicked up the line
noise a lot and that made things harder at times but over all it was a
great weekend on the radio.
I am sorry that WM5R missed out on a great Friday but I am glad I
got to get on the radio and have fun and experience the great start.
Congratulations to NR5M and W5PR on great scores. Looking forward to
the next one - and I am already building some larger antennas.
