A heavy flooding rain storm Friday morning washed away the salt and I had NO
line noise for first time in many many years ... making it possible to hear even
the weakest signals on 20/15/10. BUT stations constantly calling (not
listening) in pileups diminished this advantage and hurt the rate. Calling zero
beat also was counter productive ... if you call a little high or low and you
will be worked much more quickly in the future.
Nearly met my pre-contest goals but slipped into DXer mode far too often.
Oversleeping an hour Sunday morning (despite setting three alarms) hurt too.
Had 12 hours over 180/hour, 8 hours over 200/hour ... I live for those heart
racing hours of rate. Thank you to the 132 stations who are in the log on six
bands and another 143 on five bands. Glad to provide you the P4 multiplier. This
was the first time in 25 years there were no other big P40 stations.
First night QRN made 160 and 80 difficult, fortunately it was much quieter the
second night. Spent too much time on 160 meters both nights but I'm a confirmed
160 addict so I will continue to suffer. Signals second night to Zone 3 were
the best ever heard on Topband.
Ten meters opened relatively early both days and was simply terrific to the
USA/VE with some short EU openings. AF stations were loud as usual. First time
over 1000 contacts on 10m in many years. Can't wait for next year with even
more sunspots.
Fifteen meters was open everywhere, the QSO total tells the story.
I did not spend adequate time on 20 meters (again) - some year I will figure out
the optimum times for running EU. Condx took a terrible dive the last two
hours.
Somewhat odd conditions on 40 meters. It seemed the MUF went below 7 Mhz at
times and there was considerable absorption. Dramatic difference in signal
levels when switching between 4 el to EU and 2 el US/VE.
Likewise on 80m the 3el wire beam was effective to EU and it seemed adequate to
NA most of the night. Spending too much time on 160 hurt the 80m contact
production.
The NE (EU) and NW (US/VE) beverages were terrific assets both nights.
I remain amazed how well a two ele beam (Force 12 C3) works ... full sized
elements are the key to it's effectiveness and success.
The 40 year old Dentron MLA 2500, a gift from fellow FRCer K3NM, and expertly
reconditioned by W2NO, worked flawlessly. Less than 40w input produced a
reliable 750 watts output. Excessive power is not required to do well.
This was the last operation from my current operating position (of some 24
years). Will be moving the station to another part of the house for ARRL DX CW
in 2011 because of ongoing renovation/expansion by the owner.
Congratulations to all the operators who are using advanced 2SBIQ and SO2R/SO2V
techniques to earn amazing scores ... I wish I could do that too, but at 71
years old, the one radio approach is my best game. There seemed to be a slight
bump in participation this year due to the virus but not quite as large as I had
expected. The normal compliment of DXpeditions from all parts of the world were
sorely missed - multipliers were down 15% compared to 2019.
As always I must thank my Aruban hosts for their unending support for my
contesting activities for nearly three decades. And a big thank you to the CQWW
Contest Committee who do a great job policing the entries.
And thanks to my fellow FRC members for their ongoing support and
encouragement.
Hope to be back for this one again next fall. CQWW CW remains the BIG ONE for
me.
Regards,
John, W2GD
