Comments:
This was the least effort I have had to make to get ready to operate a contest.
When I arrived the computer did not work, but I was able to use an old computer
and get everything working on it with the radio, amplifier, antenna switching,
etc.
We are here until the end of March and now on Day 10 of a 16 day mandatory
quarantine period, wearing a wrist bracelet and carrying a tracking device. We
have a 30 meter radius from the center of the house which will allow me to go
most anywhere on my property including up the tower. After all the radio over
the next four months I will be ready to go back, hopefully get a vaccine and
play golf every day.
I put up a couple of small triangle receiving antennas on the property and asked
a local to put a 1000 foot Beverage on the rocks pointed toward Europe.
The only drama during the contest was that my (Flex) amplifier would give a HIGH
SWR RFP message (whatever that means) on about half the transmissions on 80
meters. It happened rarely on other bands but was not an issue because it was
so infrequent. When that message came on there was no power output until I
successfully keyed it again. After struggling with it on 80 meters for a while
I turned the amplifier to standby and ran 100 watts. I think my rate would be
better with 25 watts than 1500 anyway. My biggest problem is not being able to
handle a raging pileup with everyone within about 250 Hz. of each other as well
as I would like. Sometime on Saturday night I discovered that if I pressed the
transmit button on the IC-7610 the amplifier would work, so I used it to work
multipliers locking it in transmit for each transmission. I assume it is an RF
overload problem. If I can't figure it out, since I have a lot of time on my
hands, I may shunt feed the tower for 80 meters to see if that helps the
situation.
I like the assisted category but cannot muster the discipline to keep calling CQ
and use it effectively. I will leave a big pileup and start busting pileups to
try to get the most multipliers.
As compared to last year I picked up 9 zones and 36 countries on 10m and it was
good to finally work some Europe on that band again - but I lost 18 zones and
163 countries on 160-15!! That was disappointing. This year I operated four
hours less and made 300 more contacts.
73, happy holidays to everyone. and stay safe until you have a vaccine. I want
to try to pull your callsign out of the pileup next year.
Stan, ZF9CW
