Comments:
Our first CQWW CW remote. Here is hoping COVID-19 is just a memory next year and
we can all get together live, as we have been doing for our M/2 for 13 years,
since 2008.
We did this remote on the cheap. A "cheap ham" remote. Kevin W9CF,
Dave K2SS connected in using RealVNC for screen view and radio/N1MM control and
RemAud to receive the two channel audio for SO2V. Mike KC7V used his K3 Mini and
RRC box to tie into his other RRC box, that he left in my garage one day last
year. RealVNC for him too, and RemAud on the other radio. The total cost to me
Zero dollars. I think we have a lot of points for zero dollars invested. (I did
have to be awake "on call" all weekend, but no big deal).
Performance-wise,the connections, RealVNC and RemAud achieve a strong grade for
the weekend. Not very many complaints at all. Good programs to chose for the
cheap ham and those not so cheap too.
The small station here continues to surprise me, with great showings against
some truly big players. However, each contest brings its own sets of trouble,
which is always a challenge. Not to elaborate, but this year it was another,
albeit new, IMD mix that played havoc with most of the bands all weekend. Those
are always hard to track down and eliminate. In addition, we had a rx antenna
issue, costing us over 90 minutes to even evaluate, that eliminated us doing any
serious runs on 80 or 160. More to fix.
On the plus side, I had a hell of a good time and I think Dave, Mike and Kevin
did too. The ops all communicated via MMS cellphone text and via the N1MM chat
(ctrl+e). It worked well and the dreaded shift handoffs became routine.
I would like it if we never had to do remote M/2, in a major contest, but we are
ready if that has to be.
