Comments:
We operated with 6 operators. Four were remote with 2 on site. Everything went
well with few problems. Only a short power outage made the need to reboot many
systems. The conditions were surprising strange. The low bands suffered from
high absorption. The path to Europe on 80 did not exist and 40 was very poor.
Conditions on 20 were sort of half good and half not so good. However, the real
surprise was 15 which after many contests actually become fun again! Ten was
ten during a minimum with OK openings to South America. The operators give their
experiences below. Thanks to Ken, N6RO for the use of his station and local
chili.
Condx are improving!
Bob, K3EST
160: N6RO Absorption was very high and tough to hear even East Coast. Managed to
work 3 Caribbean stations. Never heard anything close to Europe. The great fun
was working 7 JAs for the first time of 160 SSB.
80: WX5S, K6AW: Condx were really tough. No Europe heard. Caribbean was
difficult the saving grace was Japan.
40: K3EST: The first thing that comes to mind is working any Europeans on 40 was
a real challenge. The signals on Friday and Saturday were weak into southern
Europe. Only CR2 and EA8 had good signals from that area of the world. Never
heard any UK station, only 1 German. Many, many calls finally got DR1A. On the
other hand 510 JAs made it into the log. The marvelous increase in YB activity
continues to nice! On the long path heard 7 Europeans + UP2L but no one heard
me. 40 is actually open to JA/YB long into the morning to almost 10 am…but
lack of late morning activity greatly limits QSOs. On Sunday afternoon, in the
last half hour, Europe finally was workable! I worked 5 mults that I could not
work the whole weekend. The end result was very few Europeans were workable from
Northern California. This was the lowest country total in recorded memory. Heard
2 VUs calling 9V1YC in early morning Sunday.
20 WD6T, K6AW I was expecting a better EU opening in the morning, based on
recent RTTY contests. Decent activity to Asia, though not many YB. Europe in our
morning productive, but signals not strong enough to run much. Nice opening to
N. Europe both days around 2330. SA and Caribbean became easier to work later
in the day, probably because they turned their antennas. Band closed by 0500z
both nights. Enjoyed race between 20m and 15m. Propagation to Africa seemed
better second day.
15 N6WM: 6WM op: After a couple years of grinding BIC during the solar minimum,
We welcomed back 15 meter band with a stellar and wide open run to asia/Asiatic
Russia/Oc/pac Friday night at the starting bell with fantastic rate. Saturday
EU/AF opening was somewhat lackluster and focused mostly on far western and
Atlantic islands/Spain/Portugal, but still yielded some fantastic multipliers
and Africa mults were achieved, and the pleasant expected appearance of Finnish
stations later in the day. As the terminator progressed another good solid run
into JA in the afternoon kept momentum going. Our Sunday AM EU opening was much
better than Saturday, allowing for qso’s deep into EU proper and British isles
and more Scandinavian stations earlier than expected. Another small run to
JA/YB Sunday PM is traditional and occurred as expected. All in all 15m was a
great band to operate for the first time in a long time. + 700 qso’s on 15
compared to last years station effort. Welcome back 15m!
10: N6WM, N6RO, K3EST (during day), WD6T.N6WM worked about half our QSO’s on
10m SO2R during a very busy 15m time. The band seemed to vault in and out of a
fully open state, producing good mults, and on Sunday had a 50 qso high rate run
into SA, mostly PY but had mults from Caribbean, CA and others calling as well.
