K3CCR is the club station at the Collington continuing-care
retirement community at FM 18OW in MD, just east of DC. N3UM and
W3GB operated M/2 in August 2020 NAQP SSB, with 6 feet between
chairs and a plexiglas shield.
Our goal was to beat our best previous claim, 462 Qs and 95 mults
in Aug. 2017 NAQP SSB. To do this, we put in 12 hrs BIC and ran as
much as we could since SSB web spots are few. This worked well; we
ran for 90% of total Qs, at an average combined rate of 91 Qs/hr.
With our 15 M and 160 M antennas faulty, we did 20 and 40 M early
and 80 and 40 M late. In the first 4 hrs 18-22Z we got 403 Qs; 205
by N3UM on 40 M and 198 by W3GB on 20 M, with 63 total mults.
The 2 hrs 22-00Z were slower; just 70 Qs and 6 mults, due to 20 M
rate slowing before 80 M was active, plus offset breaks to eat.
W3GB went from 20 M to replace N3UM on 40 M. After his break, at
2150Z N3UM found 80 M starting slowly. At 0Z we had 473 Qs, 11 more
than in August 2017.
The next 4 hrs 00-04Z were fast again; 441 total Qs, 110/hr
average, with N3UM on now-active 80 M and W3GB on 40 m with very
high rates. At 02Z we had 100 mults, 5 more than in 2017, so we
blew past our goal with hours to spare.
Rates were a bit slower 04-05Z, but not bad; 46 Qs each on 80 and
40 M. And, at 0423Z W3GB quick-checked spots 20 M and saw a red KH6.
He QSYd from 40 to 20 M and got him. He found no other Qs on 20 M,
but the mult was worth the 10 min. in the penalty box!
>From 0500-0549Z W3GB got 53 Qs on 40 M, but saw only dupes thru 0559,
so N1MM+ says we ended 9 min early. N3UM found 80 M much slower;
just 18 Qs, and no one to work after 0545Z. On all bands, we got
48 states + DC; missed ID and ND. Got 47 states + DC on 40 M; no HI.
