Not a particularly good start. Returned to 10 meters a couple times and found
strong Es to the East coast. Very little out to the west. 15 did not seem very
productive, but stayed there to get the mults. 20 was good and had coverage
over most of the USA, and a few other North Americans called in for a nice
supplement of multipliers. 40 should have rocked, but was a disappointment.
The SteppIR did not work there (as always) and it was hard to generate a steady
flow of callers. Very few W7 multipliers in the log. During the CW NAQP I had
continuous callers. There was heavy rain for a couple hours and the low bands
were really noisy. I went to both 40 and 80 early to pick up the close
multipliers. When I returned I could not generate a good run on either band.
QRN was a significant problem, often -100 dB. Still working on a 4 square for
80 and there is another 40 meter antenna in the works. Due to the QRN is was
difficult to hear the east coast on 160. I should have an inverted L up for 160
in time for the fall season. No beverages up yet, and did not use the SAL30.
It doesn't help too much during a rain storm, but is tremendous for digging out
a weak layer of signals. Missed HI and MS for WAS. I've only been in a few
NAQP and this was my first serious effort on SSB. SO2R would really help for
finding mults and moving people. I know I missed a lot.Took the first 30 minute
break about 0230Z, then finished about 1.5 hours before the end. I certainly
could use better antennas.
Recently I finished the 25 ground rods, tied to the building ground, and brought
heavy wire to the lightning protectors, switching and band pass filters in the
garage. There still are a couple intermittent coax connections that I can
resolve during CWTs. Most of the future work will be improvements rather than
building the infrastructure, but there is still some carpentry and plumbing to
do in the shack. There are still 10 monobanders out back and 9 verticals that
need attention. All cables now come into the garage instead of the window in
the shack!
