Mic gains set to '11' everybody . . .
I actually had to tell one Italian (I think he was Italian) station to stop
calling me after I told him 5 or 6 times his audio was not readable.(Hey--I
tried and tried) Maybe he didn't know any English, but I tried many times to be
polite and see if he could turn down the gain, compression, RF level,
something...I don't think he did a thing. There was no chance in under 10
minutes I could've ever got his call...and then a power level....yes--it was
actually 'THAT' BAD - Shame as he was S5 or 6 here....we could've e-a-s-i-l-y
made it.
I don't think I have -EVER- in 42 years of contesting told someone to stop
calling me ! I usually either try very hard to work them, or politely ask them
to call later when condx are better. I hope he figured it out.
No 6 banders (lotsa 5 banders tho) - my apologies to 8P5A who I pestered 2 or 3
times Sunday afternoon about getting a 10m QSO - Sorry Tom! You were just so
dang loud on 15m.....
I ended up working a very surprised PU5 for my 1rst 10m Q and a PP5 just
afterwards and that was it for 10m. (I did HEAR L55D, but no QSO)
I had erratic SWR antenna behaviour on SSB that tripped the amp constantly, so
had to run between 100w-250w on most bands...kinda varied..there were times I
was at a kW. I don't think my amp likes SSB and high SWR too much but tolerates
it just fine on CW. I guess that's alright, as I do mostly CW these days.
I operated mostly Sat. No Friday night at all (slept for the first 13.5hrs of
the contest as I wasn't feeling well) and then just played DXer for a few Q's on
Sunday sunrise on the lowbands and tuned around and actually ended up setting my
rig to scan 10m all day.(didn't work...no signals)
All I can say is bring back the sunspots and/or gimme CW - anyday!
Great turnout from all the regulars who mostly haul their rigs on airplanes or
spend their money and time away from their families to venture (mostly) South.
(though an OX/OZ1 stn was a nice surprise.)
Happy to give out NB to the deserving....I got lots of nice thanks--thanks right
back guys !
73 es CU (all of a sudden) in the next one.
