Comments:
K3CCR is the club station at the Collington continuing-care
retirement community at FM 18OW in MD, just east of DC. In 2020
CQ 160 SSB N3UM and W3GB operated Multi-Op HP, as we did in 2018
and 2019. Our goal was to beat our best result, in 2018; 1228 Q
pts, 67 mults, 82.3 K claimed.
First 3 hr. went ~OK.
N3UM ran 22-01Z for 168 Qs, 387 Q pts, and 32 St/Pv mults, just a
little behind the 200 Qs, 457 Q pts, and 33 St/Pv mults we had in 2018.
Run rate died at 01Z, so N3UM clicked spots for 1 hr. then ran
till 0224Z QRT for 48 more Qs, 114 Q pts, and TX and ZF mults.
W3GB took the late shift 0240-0703. He hoped for wee-hr. results like
in 2018, when he got 118 Qs, 13 DX mults, and 13 St/Pv mults.
Alas, not even close; 86 Qs, 1 DX mult, and 6 St/Pv mults, WI to AZ.
Same op, same gear, but condx far worse, with k=3. At 0703Z QRT we had
totals of 687 Q pts and 42 mults, vs 875 pts and 64 mults in 2018.
Condx were still poor for W3GB 22-02Z Sat. He ran steady but slow for
63 of 68 Qs and 150 Q pts, but got just one Pv mult, NS, and no DX mults.
So, N3UM expected little in his late shift. Surprise; k fell to 1 and
then 0 vs 2 or 3 for the first time, and he got 11 DX mults 0235-04Z
plus 2 more at 0429 and 0540Z, 10 of them EUs. He also got 4 St mults
in the W. and 217 Q pts by 0649Z QRT. All fun, but it did not close the
gap vs 2018; -6% in Q pts, -10% in mults, so -16% claimed score,
simple math. We never heard CA, and got only 4 VE and 3 W7 mults.
