This was our third time operating the CQ160 CW contest from the Point Amour
Lighthouse, and as they say, the third time is the charm. In 2006 a winter
storm took out the power before the contest started. We operated the first 7
hours on a generator and ended up with 1506 Qs and 1.473M points. Last year the
road to the lighthouse was blocked with snow. We spent the first two days
travelling the final 2km on snowmobile before we were able to get the road
plowed and get the station assembled. The winds were relentless and we were
beat before the contest started. We ended up with fewer Qs (1286) and fewer
points (1.141M) than 2006.
This year didn't start out the best. One of my flights was cancelled and I was
a day late getting to Goose Bay. We had a day of slack built into the schedule
so Dave VE9CB and I still managed to get to Point Amour on Sunday as scheduled.
Frank VO1HP wasn't so lucky. A major winter storm dumped close to 1m of snow in
the St. John's area in less than 24 hours on the Friday before the contest.
That, coupled with hurricane force winds, put the city in a state of emergency
for a week and closed down the airport for 5 days. Frank was supposed to join
Dave and I on Monday but didn't arrive until Wednesday.
The weather this year was the best that we've ever seen at Point Amour. The
winds were relatively calm, the road to the lighthouse was clear, and there was
very little snow. Dave and I had the antennas up and station configured in 8
hours. Last year it took us the better part of three days.
As mentioned above,in 2006 we had a final score of 1.473M and we won the
multi-op category. Our 1.14 M score from last year netted us 9th place. This
year, our score is up over 50% from last year, yet we will drop down in the over
all standings. That's a sign that interest in the contest is growing and so is
the competition, which is a good thing!
According to the cq160cw.com results page, this is the 3rd highest multi-op
score in ever NA. The #1 & #2 multi-op scores were by VY2ZM.
Our QSO rates this year were better than last year, and we felt like we were
very well-heard in Europe.
We were within 10K of last year's score (1.14M) after the first 15 hours!

Mults heard but not worked:
WY – Heard and called W6KGP several times but he was always covered by a loud
EU. The EU thought we were calling him, would call us, realize it was a dupe,
then start CQing again. The EU wouldn't back off and let us work the WY
station, and we don't blame him. It got confusing for everyone so we moved on.
JA – One JH3 called us, but we couldn't pull out the full call. We heard and
called JA7NI but he couldn't get our full call. We worked about a dozen JAs on
160m FT8 in the days leading up to the contest. Completing either one of these
QSOs would have been a BIG achievement.
4K6FO, 4U1A, ER4A, SV9DJO – Called many times on Saturday and Sunday evening
but couldn't get through the EU wall.
HH2AA – Only heard Friday evening but the pileup was huge and we couldn't get
through. Never heard or seen spotted after.
Never heard or worked VY1, VE8, VY0, or VY2. We knew VY2ZM was at JT5DX (worked
on 160m CW before the contest) so, before the contest we tried to coax some VY2
ops to get on, but it didn't seem to work. We saw a 1141Z spot for VY2WW on
Sunday, but by the time we got there the spot was 3 minutes old and all we heard
was others saying “QRT”. My guess was that he got on, called “CQ”, was
spotted, the hoards descended on him (it was the only VY2 spotted all weekend),
and he said “Nope, not for me!” and went QRT :=)
Worked 2x VKs but no ZL. Heard and called VK6VZ but just couldn't get through.
No V5 or ZS.
Thanks for all the QSOs! See you again next year from the Point Amour
Lighthouse!
73,
Chris VO2AC (VE3FU) (and Dave VE9CB (VO2AAA), and Frank VO1HP).
