Comments:
This was a wild one. Not quite as wild as KL9A's hurricane Otto operation in
2016 CQWW CW, but close. The station was setup ready to go about a week prior
to the contest. The first op, Chris, KL9A arrived Sunday night and things were
good for about 40 hours. Then, while we were out at lunch on Tuesday we
received word that a freak lightning strike had hit so close to the house that
there were flame balls inside. There's lots of lightning down here typically,
so I didn't think too much of it - until we got back to the station. The list
of damage was extensive. One Optibeam OB17-4 knocked out, our 40m Southeast
antenna at 130ft destroyed, the 160m full size loop not functioning, two of the
three rotatable antennas not able to rotate, every single one of the four
4-stack switch boxes fried, both computers in the shack non functioning (one was
repairable with a spare video card stolen from an old PC), one Flex 6600M radio
toasted, a Powermaster II power meter fried, SDRPlay destroyed etc etc. So an
easy contest preamble became a mad scramble to repair, salvage and replace what
we could. Fortunately one of our ops, Nate, N4YDU was not scheduled to arrive
until Thursday, so he was able to carry some gear down to help us recover. At
the end of the day we were able to reconstruct the station to about 85% of
original functionality although our amplifiers continually faulted and needed to
be reset, I'm not sure if that was actually an amplifier issue or some sort of
lightning damage manifestation.
To top it off, our fourth op became seriously ill on Friday and was not able to
get in front of a radio until Sunday afternoon.
In spite of all that, we (with the possible exception of our ill compatriot) had
a great time on the bands and conditions were better than we had hoped for. If
10m had been what it was like on Thursday before the contest, it would have been
amazing. We felt like we started strong on 20m and then 40m picked up nicely
when 20m finally stopped producing for the evening. At around midnight local
time 20m was open to EU both nights of the the contest- a first in may years
from here. Our 15m openings to EU were short, but we had steady USA business on
that band as all day both days. 10m was open both days, with the better opening
being on Sunday - a day which produced two EU QSOs on 10m, another first in a
few years here.
At the present time the station is completely dismantled, hopefully in order to
be put back together properly in time for CQWW CW.
Thanks to everyone for the Qs, and congratulations to the other M/S stations on
the other side of the pond who did such a fantastic job and
73,
Kam
