Comments:
I think like most that operated this contest, curiosity was key. Between
finishing projects around the house, I could dabble with FT4 and FT8
contesting.
There are certainly software kinks to work out, like shifting contest
frequencies that didn't match the pre-programmed WSJT-X drop downs, or a missing
160m drop down. Numerous glitches like changing the contest to EU VHF without my
permission or suddenly giving a signal report.
One of the biggest problems I encountered was handling QSO's in between other
QSO's. Many times a station would call, and if he/she didn't get an answer
immediately, they disappeared, only to reappear several QSO's later. That
happened a lot. Many times I'd get "Invalid QSO Data" when logging
because of some glitch with how that information was originally stored or
transferred. That error stopped me in my tracks. I was able to resolve it,
usually at the expensive of stations waiting to work me. This was a problem
early on when it first occurred and caught me off guard.
This mode is unique in that you can't hear any individual signal, and how the
band is acting or sounding. The sound of FT4/FT8 is annoying enough that muting
is preferred.
I'm certain there will be software fixes and enhancements (thanks N1MM+ crew and
K1JT for your hard work!). A QSY feature to move other stations might be nice,
although I'm not sure how that would work in this contest environment.
I can see a special operating strategy develop that is very different from other
contests in other modes. This is completely software driven with FT4 and FT8
signals on each band that require some thought and strategy within the confines
of the WSJT-X program, and operator behavior within that environment.
Thanks to all for the Qs.
