Got to the local hilltop extra early here in central NY to avoid rain but had
strong west winds just like in the 2m sprint, so I set up a short mast again.
Started by calling CQ to the north, then slowly turned the 10-el Yagi around to
north again, making a few contacts along the way. Then I switched to FM simplex
and started back the other way while calling CQ, and to my surprise, I actually
made an FM contact which is rare above 2m here. Went back to SSB and near the
end of the second hour I worked an Ohio station who came up to 5x3 on CW, so I
figured the propagation must be improving with a decrease in wind speed. Spent
most of the second half of the sprint on CW. I got called by a Virginia station
who was my best DX to the south (FM08). Persistence paid off, as the final hour
saw an unexpected increase in activity, and I worked a station in the state of
Maine who had just finished his antenna work 5 days earlier. That was my best DX
at 384 mi / 618 km.
