Comments:
For the second year in a row Arizona enjoyed an unprecedented level of activity
in the January VHF Contest. While some stations stuck to FT8 to milk 6 meters
for every weak Es opening, some of us operated SSB, FM and CW to work as many
"local" stations as possible and chase three rovers and a hoard of
SOTA single-op portable stations. This latter strategy is the formula that
worked last year and was repeated this year. Nearly twenty portable stations
and rover stations KK6MC, N7GP (ex-WA8WZG) and AC7FF (mentored by N1RWY)
generated a massive amount of activity on Sunday.
The following stats show how small the impact of FT8 was on my score.
Band Mode QSOs Pts Grd Pt/Q
50 CW 2 2 0 1.0
50 USB 57 57 10 1.0
50 FT8 4 4 0 1.0
144 FM 2 2 0 1.0
144 USB 54 54 11 1.0
420 FM 7 14 1 2.0
420 USB 41 82 9 2.0
Total Both 167 215 31 1.3
Thanks for the contacts and your patience.
