100 W, dipoles at 5-10 m, keyed by hand on a Vibroplex bug.
While I had planned to put in a solid effort on this contest, a few
opportunities came up at the last minute that were too good to pass up. I ended
up getting on for a few hours on Saturday morning local, then resuming in the
evening. With less operating time than I had planned, I didn't get around to
plugging in the microphone and PTT. Saturday morning 10 m was open at least
within the US, and it was fun to get a few contacts and multipliers there. I
slowly made my way down the bands, trying to at least pick up the US zones on
all six bands.
I was surprised how few European stations I could hear. While there were a few
handfuls of them, it seemed like most were HQ stations. I worked one of the
Y8** stations, and having not read the announcement of what callsigns they would
be using spent quite a while listening to be sure that I had their call correct
and that it wasn't a YO station with a poor fist.
With storms around, the low bands were quite noisy so I didn't spend too much
time there. Things were fairly good on 40 and 20 m, and I was pleased to see
how well 20 m was doing even at 11 PM local (0400z)---I even got in a little
run!
Overall I had more contacts on 15 and 10 m than I expected, but 20 and 40 m
weren't quite as open as I had hoped. It looks like I ended up with about 33
DXCC, which is lower than I was aiming for at the outset but seems quite
reasonable given the amount of effort I put in, band conditions, and my
station's capabilities.
