Comments:
As a wannabe DXer without good antennas (or no antennas on occasion, living in
the city) I stuck to S&P CW and never developed any running skills. I went
from 1970 to 2007 and never called CQ from my own station, so I like to do this
contest to gain running experience. It's nice to be popular, if only for a
weekend.
Can't say conditions were very good. Toward the end of the contest 40m was very
noisy at my QTH. I expected 80m to be worse, but it wasn't, so I finished up
there. I'm always surprised my 80m antenna works as well as it does. RF finds a
way, I guess. It leaks in, it leaks out. DL3DXX even called me there for three
bands.
The final solar stats were:
SFI=67
A=31
K=5
SSN=14
eSSN=-10
Nothing to email home about.
I still want to know how so many QPs plus the ARI ended up on the same weekend.
We need more weekends. If we shortened the week to six days, we'd free up 52
days for 8 more weekends a year and these contests could spread out.
An interesting event on this crowded weekend was the FT8 Dxpedition mode test
where I had smooth QSOs with the West Coast station, W7/KH7Z, and G4WJS in his
bonus test afterwards. I'm all agog to find out how this will work out with the
Baker Island Dxpedition this summer. This sure ain't the way my kids' father
worked DX back in the day.
Thanks to all who called me and I hope to see you again next year.
