Comments:
Another activation of a state park for the Michigan State Parks On The Air
(MSPOTA). Kal-Haven Trail State Park is a multi-use Trail, Foot, Bicycle, and
Equestrian.
Got set up by a few minutes after 1830Z, but the wind blew the antenna down, so
I didn't get fully operational until a few minutes before 1900Z. But,
conditions were ideal - low RF noise, S-1 to S-3, good propagation, and enough
activity at the outset to net 18 contacts in the first 30 minutes.
With this number in the bag I ceased operating, went to 30 meters to see if I
could find a friend on another park, but found N4A operating as part of the
NAQCC birthday celebration.
I cut the effort short because a friend was selling a pristine Heathkit HW-9
transceiver and accessories, and wanted to culminate the deal at 2230Z back in
Grand Rapids. I "lost" my HW-9 to a friend who promised to fix a
receiver problem, so this is a suitable replacement.
Again, I found that "running" was possible, probably at least 50% of
the contacts resulted from "running." It's comforting to know that
my QLF with my trusty J-38 @ 16 to 18 WPM and a marginal strenght setup can
actually "run" with the big guns!
Thanks to all who pulled my pipsqueak signal out of the mud.
