Comments:
We drummed up just three members for FD this year plus one XYL and two grandkids
(one for setup only while the other worked under her own call). Setting up the
AB/577 and A4 along with stringing an OCF 80m dipole was a significant effort
for a bunch of geezers!
Operating out of a trailer in the mountains was a big improvement over the
tents of previous years. We had a portable A/C ready, but it wasn't necessary.
Unfortunately, a nearby thunderstorm shut us down for nearly four hours
Saturday night. We take safety very seriously, along with caring for the two
K3's.
We had a lot of good runs on CW, even when searching and pouncing. But there
were plenty of calls during the latter that were unproductive. Listening to
the stations we called, it became apparent many of them couldn't hear us due to
QRM from their own rigs. OTOH, we frequently operated the K3's on the one beam
with a Dunestar triplexer and filters with no problems.
While "not a contest", FD is always a lot of fun, even with all the
effort it takes to put a decent station on-the-air. Sharing the joys and agony
make the effort worthwhile. From the Friday night BBQ at a nearby restaurant
all the way through to the end-of-event beer, FD 2017 was an event to remember.
Here's hoping the three of us and more can do it all over again in 2018.
